So far with this Coronavirus pandemic we’ve noticed (and so has the media) that people are doing a hell of a lot more online now, both in creating and consuming content.
This has created an absolutely amazing opportunity for everyone, especially those businesses that are still running during this troublesome time.
We’re spending more time online now than ever before. A lot of us are suddenly left with unlimited free time, after a large portion of the country having been furloughed. Even those now working from home now have more time due to the removal of the daily commute. Everyone’s suddenly spending more time online now, especially since we aren’t meeting up in person.
And that’s exactly where the opportunity is.
Plumbers and Gas Engineers, now have a major chance to stand out. You’re going to be needed even more over these coming weeks (possibly months!) because everyone’s plumbing and gas are being used more while we’re all stuck at home.
It means that if you can make yourself stand out and be remembered, then you’ll do really well during this trying time and beyond.
How do you do that? It’s quite simple.
Help your Local Community During the Coronavirus Pandemic
You don’t have to change careers or become a charity to do this. You can become part of your local community by sharing helpful advice. Which will help people who maybe don’t want to call you out, but need a little help.
For example, I’d recommend everyone in this industry to make a short mini-series during this lockdown. It could be about fixing something as simple as a leaky tap. Or cover how different boilers work (many homeowners haven’t a clue how to use them!). Things that are super simple to you, but that the rest of us aren’t privy to.
Share what you know on the kind of things that you don’t need a lot of (preferably any) training to do. The kind of things you would get an Apprentice to do in their first week or so (you know, after sending him to the merchants for a ‘long stand’).
Help your local community with the simple things, so that people don’t have to increase the chance of spreading this virus by having someone visit to fix it.
We’re not advising you create an entire plumbing course, just a few tips on the topic you know so well.
Why would I teach people to do my job?
The benefits to this can be astronomical. It’s a marketing method as old as time. But I’m sure a lot of you are thinking;
- How the hell does this help me and my business?
- If I tell them how to do this stuff, they’ll never hire me!
It’s true. If someone can do it themselves, they won’t pay you to do it. Why would they? But they’ll most certainly pay you for the more complicated things. They’ll pay you to swap their boiler. To fix things that they don’t have a clue about. Then they’ll call you to sort their gas work when it’s needed. They’ll do this because you helped them during this trying time. #
How do I know this? Because it’s human nature. When other people give, it’s natural for us to want to give back, sooner or later. We don’t like feeling like we owe people anything. So we tend to try and ‘give back’ to balance the karma score, so to speak.
More importantly, they’ll remember you. And that’s the real benefit here because we’re expecting a recession very soon. If it’s not already happening. And the biggest obstacle you’ll face after this coronavirus pandemic is falling into obscurity.
The best way to avoid falling into obscurity is to be remembered.
So take this opportunity to start helping the people around you. Show people what they can do at home. Educate them and you’ll be amazed at how it can help you get found online and pay dividends in the coming months.
